Spring afternoon at Cheng Kung Lake, with the air just a little warm and humid, and the bauhinia quietly in bloom. Along the lakeside, clusters of pink flowers open like soft clouds, bringing life and color to the campus.

This spot is not just a place to pause after class. It is a slice of slowed-down campus life. Some stroll, some chat, and others linger under the flowers. Occasionally, families from outside wander in with their children, enjoying a relaxed afternoon by the water and blossoms. These moving figures make the scene more than just scenery and capture a sense of life that uniquely represents the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU).

This day also happens to be the eve of the NCKU Bike Festival. Across the bridge, tents have quietly gone up by the lake, ready for the weekend festivities. The calm of the moment, paired with the anticipation of the upcoming activity, has created a subtle, charming contrast. In this blend of everyday life and event preparation, the scene reflects both the gentle energy of spring and the vibrant spirit of NCKU.

Bauhinia variegata

Blooming from March to April, Bauhinia variegata is known for its pale lavender-to-pink flowers, sparse foliage, and heart-shaped leaves resembling a goat’s hoof. Planted across the NCKU campus, from Cheng Kung Lake to its walkways, it adds a familiar and captivating touch to the spring landscape.

The flower is often associated with elegance, innocence, and beautiful memories, and it is also seen as a symbol of emotional connection and serendipitous encounters. At NCKU, this sea of spring blossoms not only adorns the campus, but also carries memories of companionship, and youth.
