Sustainable Campus &Development Blueprint
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has set a long-term goal of achieving a carbon-neutral campus by 2041. Guided by four core pillars—Green Campus, Circular Economy, Energy Efficiency, and Low-Carbon Transformation—the University systematically advances campus sustainability and smart campus development. Digital technologies are extensively integrated into university administration and campus infrastructure to enhance governance efficiency and institutional resilience.
To strengthen its sustainability governance framework, NCKU has established a multi-tiered and cross-disciplinary structure of sustainability-related committees, overseen at the presidential or vice-presidential level, to coordinate decision-making, consultation, and implementation. The University Sustainability Development Committee serves as the highest-level governance body for sustainability, responsible for deliberating institutional sustainability policies, integrating university-wide sustainability initiatives, and aligning efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In parallel, the International Advisory Board provides strategic guidance from a global perspective, offering insights into sustainability governance, campus resilience, and international higher education trends, thereby enhancing NCKU’s global engagement and forward-looking vision.
At the level of campus planning and practical implementation, NCKU has established the Sustainable Campus Planning and Utilization Committee, which is responsible for reviewing overall development plans for each campus, formulating guidelines for sustainable campus planning and design, and supporting both software- and hardware-related projects associated with campus development, spatial planning, and landscape design. This ensures that campus development consistently balances environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, and long-term usability.
In addition, NCKU has formed the NCKU Sustainability Development Promotion Committee , under which task-oriented working groups are organized to address key dimensions including environmental sustainability, campus resilience, well-being, education, and social responsibility. Through regular meetings and project-based performance monitoring, the University ensures the steady and continuous advancement of sustainability initiatives. Collectively, NCKU has established an integrated sustainability governance system that links decision-making, advisory, and implementation levels, demonstrating a strong institutional commitment and long-term dedication to sustainable development.
Data-Driven Sustainable Governance
Through institutional data analytics, NCKU accurately monitors indicators such as student learning outcomes, faculty research performance, administrative efficiency, and resource utilization. These insights serve as a critical basis for developing sustainability strategies, organizational adjustments, and resource allocation, embodying the University’s commitment to data-driven governance.
