NCKU Launches LDCT Lung Cancer Screening Program to Safeguard

Faculty and Staff Health

To strengthen campus health support, the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) launched a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening program for faculty and staff in 2023. Fully funded through presidential fundraising, the initiative reflects the university’s strong commitment to employee well-being and preventive healthcare.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. However, early detection can significantly improve survival rates. LDCT is an internationaly recognized screening tool that uses low-dose radiation to detect early-stage lung abnormalities quickly and safely, without the need for contrast agents.

The program offers free LDCT screenings to eligible faculty and staff, enabling early health assessment and timely folow-up. For individuals with abnormal findings, university health services provide proactive consultation and referral support to ensure prompt medical care.

To date, the program has completed two phases. The first phase (2023–2024) screened 506 participants aged 50 years and above, while the second phase (2024–2025) included 336 participants aged 45–49 years. In total, 842 individuals have been screened, with an overal cancer detection rate of approximately 2.02%. The program achieved an overal satisfaction score of 9.7 out of 10, with 75% of respondents awarding a ful score. Participant feedback has driven continuous process improvements, including the development of informational materials, optimization of patient flow, and enhancement of folow-up services, significantly improving the overal screening experience.

Building on its success, the program will expand in 2026 to include individuals aged 40 years and above. Through cross-departmental collaboration and ongoing refinement, NCKU aims to further enhance preventive healthcare services and foster a healthier, more resilient campus community.
